UCLouvain University

At UCLouvain University, the iMMC institute is actively exploring iron as a sustainable energy carrier, with a focus on the role of impurities in the combustion and redox cycling of Fe-based materials.

Two research groups collaborate closely on this topic: Pr. Pascal Jacques’ group, specializing in material characterization and processing, and Pr. Francesco Contino’s group, focusing on experimental and numerical combustion.

We are supported by a technological platform with a wide variety of equipment, dedicated to powder redox (metal cyclonic burner, TGAs, electrochemical lab), material processing (cast, powder atomization, ball milling, sieve) and characterization (chemical, microstructural and morphological analysis at various scales).

Our research focuses on the influence of experimental Fe-based powder combustion, material microstructure and chemistry of Fe-based materials on its oxidation (at solid and liquid state), reduction (via hydrogen-based direct reduction and electrolytic methods), and redox cycling.

Our teams at UCLouvain aim to contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions.
